  14. <p>     DIED. Wang Hongwen, 57, youngest member of China's Gang of
  15. Four during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution; of a liver ailment;
  16. in Beijing. He and the three other Gang members were responsible
  17. for purging tens of thousands of party members and
  18. intellectuals and launching ultra-leftist ideological and
  19. political campaigns. In 1981 he was sentenced to life in prison
  20. for wrongful persecution and plotting to overthrow the
  21. government.
